How it works

Standby vs. portable — what's the difference?

A standby generator is permanently installed beside your home and powered by natural gas or propane. When the power fails, an automatic transfer switch starts it within seconds and switches your home over — no cords, no fuel runs, no being awake at 3 a.m. When utility power returns, it switches back and shuts down automatically.

Prefer a budget-friendly option? We also install portable generator inlets (an inlet box and interlock) so you can safely power key circuits from a portable unit. We'll help you weigh convenience vs. cost.

Sizing & coverage

Whole-home or just the essentials?

You don't always need to power everything. We perform a load calculation and help you choose: a larger unit for whole-home coverage, or a right-sized unit for essential circuits — heat, refrigerator, sump pump, and key outlets — which keeps your home safe and comfortable for less.

Either way, you get an honest recommendation based on your home and budget, not the biggest unit on the truck.

Fuel, permits & inspection

Natural gas or propane — and done by the book

Standby generators run on natural gas (ideal if you already have a gas line — no refueling and an essentially unlimited run time) or propane (a great option if you don't). We'll help you choose based on what's available at your home.

Generator installations require electrical — and typically gas — permits and inspection. Fuse Electric handles the permit process and coordinates the required electrical inspection. If contractor attendance is required by the municipality or inspector, we will make the appropriate arrangements. The gas connection is coordinated with the appropriate licensed professionals, and all work is completed to NEC and applicable local code.

FAQ

Generator questions, answered

It depends on the generator size, the distance of the gas and electrical runs, the transfer switch, and the pad — plus any panel work. We assess your home and provide a clear, flat price up front in a free estimate — often from just a few photos.
Either. A whole-home standby generator can power everything, or we can cover essential circuits (heat, fridge, sump pump, key outlets) for a smaller, more affordable unit. We size it with a load calculation based on your priorities.
If you have a natural gas line, that's usually the simplest — no refueling and an essentially unlimited run time. If not, propane is a great option. We'll help you choose based on what's available at your home.
Most installs take one to two days for the electrical work, transfer switch, and generator set, plus coordination of the gas connection and the required inspection.
Yes. An automatic transfer switch detects an outage and starts the generator within seconds, then switches you back to utility power automatically when it returns — no action needed from you.
Yes — generator installations require electrical (and typically gas) permits and inspection. Fuse Electric handles the permit process and coordinates the required electrical inspection. If contractor attendance is required by the municipality or inspector, we will make the appropriate arrangements.
Very little day to day. Most run a brief automatic self-test weekly, and an annual service (oil, filter, inspection) keeps them reliable. We'll walk you through what your unit needs.
It depends on whether you want whole-home or essential-circuit coverage and your home's electrical load. We perform a load calculation and right-size the unit — never overselling capacity you don't need.
