Is it time?

Signs your panel needs an upgrade

If any of these sound familiar, it's worth having your panel looked at. Some are about convenience — others are genuine safety concerns.

📦
A fuse box or 60–100A service

Older service that can't keep up with a modern home's demands.

⚠️
Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel

Panels widely recognized as a potential fire hazard (see below).

🔁
Breakers trip often

A sign your panel is overloaded or failing.

🔌
Adding an EV charger or addition

New large loads often need more capacity or breaker space.

💡
Flickering lights / too few circuits

Relying on power strips and extension cords throughout the house.

Sizing it right

100A vs 200A — how much service do you need?

Many older Bergen County homes were built with 60A, 100A, or a fuse box — fine for the 1970s, but tight for today's central air, electric appliances, hot tubs, and EV chargers. A 200A service upgrade gives most homes comfortable room to grow.

We don't guess. We perform a proper load calculation based on your home and your plans, then recommend the right size — sometimes that's 200A, sometimes your existing service is perfectly fine. Either way, you get a straight answer, not an upsell.

⚡ Told you need an upgrade just to charge an EV?

You may not. In many cases a home can add EV charging with load management instead of a full service upgrade — we run the load calculation first and give you a straight answer.

Safety first

Federal Pacific & Zinsco panels

If your home still has a Federal Pacific (Stab-Lok) or Zinsco panel, it's worth taking seriously. These panels are widely recognized in the electrical industry as a potential fire hazard — their breakers can fail to trip during a fault — and many home insurers ask that they be replaced. We've replaced many across Bergen County.

⚠️ Have a Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel?

We strongly recommend replacement. If you also notice a burning smell, scorch marks, or warm breakers, treat it as urgent and call us right away at 201-397-5400.

Permits, utility & inspection

Done by the book — and coordinated for you

Panel and service upgrades in New Jersey require an electrical permit and a town inspection — and a service upgrade also involves coordinating with the utility. Fuse Electric handles all of it: we manage the permit process, schedule and coordinate the PSE&G disconnect and reconnect, perform the work to NEC and applicable local code, and coordinate the required electrical inspection. If contractor attendance is required by the municipality or inspector, we make the appropriate arrangements. You get a clean, fully-documented upgrade with no runaround.
